This
Gobelins tapestry is a French copy of one of the series of twelve
16th century Brussels tapestries depicting the months of the year
in a hunting context. The gallery also owns tapestries representing
the months of June and October. The original series was known
as THE HUNTS OF MAXIMILLIAN and may have been produced for the
Emperor Charles V. The copies were produced most probably for
an aristocrat at the court of Louis XV.In the composition, The
hunters are making a report to the figure on the horse, thought
to represent Ferdinand of Austria, of the animals of which they
have found trace before setting off on the stag hunt. The Priory
of Rouge-Cloitre, where Emperor Charles and his party lodged,
near to Soignes, south of Brussels, can be seen in the background.
