BUST
OF MEDICI was a good example of Fortini's portrait busts. He was
also a skilled tomb and church sculptor who paid careful attention
to finely worked detail and textural distinctions. Prince Ferdinando
de Medici of Tuscany (1633 - 1713) was an art connoisseur particularly
of Sculpture and a great patron of the arts generally. His emblem,
lightning striking through clouds, was carved onto the breastplate
and the associated motto, ET LUCET ET TERRET ( 'It casts both
light and terror') is on the base.
