Antiquities form an important part of Lever's collection at the gallery; he wanted to draw parallels between the English neo-classical style of art of which he was so fond and the Greek and Roman pieces which he seriously began collecting in 1913. Lever was interested in archaeological material and he helped to finance excavations in Egypt and the Sudan. He formed a collection, which, though not large, contains pieces of important historical value.
