CHINA
STAND was one of a pair of japanned china stands from one of William
and John Linnell's 'Chinese' bedroom suite at Badminton. Lever
was fascinated by the chinoiserie idiom in English furniture partly
because of a 19th century revival and also because he enjoyed
strange and rare pieces. The stand is fashionnned from pine and
mahogany and was probably designed by John Linnell - William Linnel,
John's father was still running the workshop at this point. A
drawing by John shows a different colour scheme in red, blue and
yellow. The present scheme dates from the mid- or late 19th century.Other
items from the original bedroom suite at Badminton - the state
bed, the commode and two armchairs from the collection of eight
are in the Victoria and Albert Museum.
