Haven't visited this site for quite a while. It looks great
although I miss the picture of the art gallery in full size,
I used to have this up on my computer all day so I could feel
that I was at home. This new site looks great. The photos of
the village taken just a couple of days ago are just wonderful,
thank you so much. It is 40 degrees here in Australia, blinkin
hot. I would do anything to be trudging through that snow around
the boating lake. I am always at my most homesick at Christmas
time, I miss my Mum, Mrs Lawrence in Central Road. I wish I
was with her. Thanks for this great site, it makes me feel a
little closer to where I would really like to be. Especially
I would like to be closer to Griffiths' and to taste one of
their iced finger buns, yum!! Happy New Year to one and all.

This is a great site loved reading the tales that i could relate
to myself- falling in the boating lake, the baths where I first
started swimming with the school and house wifary where we had
to go to learn how to cook clean and go shopping, then to leave
school - my first job was packing soap powder- and Mr Maxwell
with his bag of balloons and all his kids . keep up the good
work with this site- Hazel

The
rag man! that was Mr Maxwell from Town lane, boy could he sing,(
henny ole rag,)he would give us a tanner and we would give him
anything!!!! The coal man lived in that big house next to Mayor
park, what a job that poor guy had.My fathers family lived in
a big house in Bebington village that a famous poet lived in
during the late 1800s I think you can read all about the guy
in the library, he was eccentric! my dad told us he used to
sleep in his coffin on the eve of his birthday, and you can
see stones with little riddles on in Mayer park to this day.
I remember Beb village before they changed it all, Penneys the
butcher shop, where the brothers that owned it used to amuse
the kids with chickens feet, uhhhh. But very fond memories of
my home town.

Does
the gallery still mummify bodies in the basement? Does Terry
Davies still do terrible Al Jolson impersonations? I had a beer
at the Bridge in November, tastes just as good. Was Mr Harris
the Cricket Teacher ? Mr Byron was the Head master if my memory
serves me right.Playing for Churchie at the oval was great,
playing for Churchie against Grove street at Grove street was
a liability ! what a great school to go to.

Yes!
I too remember the boating lake with all that slimey stuff on
the bottom, we were convinced if we fell in we would come out
covered in leeches, ha, we tried our best to throw as many kid"s
in as we could ( little horror"s we were) Yes why was the enbankment
alway"s on fire? We used to cross the train track to get to
the baths, as we lived in Parkside RD. MY poor mum had a heart
attack when she found us doing it one night when she was on
her way home from working at Lever"s we got a good hiding that
night!!!!( stopped us for a while) HAPPY DAY"S would not swap
them for the world!!!!

Who
remembers... The ice-cream man 'Stop me and Buy one' (a chest
freezer on a bike)? The smell of Lifebuoy soap in the footbath
at the swimming baths? The carpet on the pews in Christ Church
that itched the back of your legs (short trousers, remember)?
The coalman, the bread van and the rag-and-bone man ("Henny-yole-raygzzz")?
The Mens Club Children's Christmas Party at Hulme Hall (with
Mr. Gately as Santa)? Dutch Elm disease? Conkering at the top
of Queen Mary's Drive or the Dell? Your first pint in the Bridge
Inn (Smith's Bitter)? Your last pint in the Bridge Inn? School
sports day on Pool Bank (my certificate for 1st place in 'Tins
on Feet' July 1964 hangs on my office wall!)? Playing for Churchie
(at the Oval, curiously)? Why did the railway embankment always
seem to be on fire? The village fete? A family day out - at
Raby Mere! (and pretending that you enjoyed the electric shock
machine)? Mrs Roberts (Windy Bank?) turning 100? The Port Sunlight
News 'spot the mistake' photo on the back page? Whatever happened
to nostalgia???

Hi,
everybody, gee this site is getting better and better. I never
used to pinch stuff from the allotments, honest! I was a good
girl.......yeah right. I loved the village in the winter, especially
when it snowed and we could build snowmen (how can you tell?)
Do they ever have snowwomen??? Its like a fairy town village,
cold but beautiful. The Olympics will soon be starting over
here, I'd rather be walking through Port Sunlight with a bag
of chips, with vinegar and a carton of mushy peas. Viva Port
Sunlight!!!!! Luv Kath

re:
Boating Lake Incidents. My Dad insists that you are not a 'true'
villager until you have fallen into the blasted thing!!. My
initiation came in 1973 when I attepted to collect my Blue Star
Yacht and went in at the 'War Memorial End' (would you call
that the shallow or deep end??). In tears at the embarrasment,
my so called mate (Simon Coles are you reading this?) told me
that if I didnt get home and cleaned up in 5 minutes that I
would die from poisoning. I got home swiftly in floods of tears
and near hysterics to be met by my parents holding their sides
with laughter. My dad's final comment was "why didn't you stop
in and do a few lenghts son". Come on ladies and gents, lets
have some tales please. I cannot be the only wally who has done
this sort of thing!!

a few notes to add to the note I sent yesterday. I was born
at 27 The Ginnel, in 1938. My mother's maiden name was Peggy

in 1937 and set up home at 62 Gorseyville Road, Bebington...in
a home built by Archie Bolton. Anyone out there remember any
of them? Mum is still alive and lives in a sheltered community
in Bromborough. Have a Blessed Easter!

My elderly aunt, Gene Lever, recently saw an article in a Scottish

Unfortunately she has mislaid this particular edition and as
we are in Western Australia, we are unable to locate a back
copy (September 1999?) which contained this article. Does anyone
have either access to a copy of this article that they could
possibly fax to me ? or perhaps access to the text that they
could email ? Just in case faxing is possible, my fax number
