Bellringing at
Christ Church
The Bells
at Christ Church Christ Church, Port Sunlight has a peal of eight bells
which were installed in time for the opening of the church in 1904.
As with most churches in the U.K. the bells are rung 'full circle' which
allows change-ringing in the uniquely English style. However, Christ
Church is unique itself, being the only United Reformed Church to have
such bells which are found mainly in Anglican establishments.
Ringing Occasions
The bells are rung regularly for Sunday Services, at Wednesday evening
practices and for weddings - mostly on Saturdays in the summer. Additionally,
Peals (3 hours continuous ringing) or Quarter Peals may be rung to mark
local or national events.
Learning to Ring
Each ringer
in a band must learn to control his/her own bell, coursing through the
other bells in a predetermined pattern or 'method'. Although it can
take many months for learners to become proficient at even the most
basic aspects of change ringing, it is not necessary to be strong or
even musically gifted to become a ringer. If you can climb stairs and
are between 10 and 60 years of age, you can try. Once competent, ringers
are encouraged to become members of the Wirral Branch of the Chester
Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers.
